How do the goals change the calculation?

You start by choosing a goal —

‍Max Yield is for those looking to maximize returns. The calculator allocates most of your funds to investments that offer the highest interest.

‍Balanced provides a mix of growth and security. It splits your funds between higher-interest opportunities and protected investments for a steady return with some security through FSCS coverage.

‍Protection focuses on safety. Most of your cash is spread across multiple accounts (up to a set limit), with the rest in high-interest options. This focusses on more diversification and increased FSCS coverage.

Once you’ve set your goal, the widget calculates three key metrics: Yield (the returns you’ll get), Liquidity (how quickly you can access your cash), and Protection (the safety of your funds). Based on these factors, it displays how your cash is allocated and estimates the increase in returns you could see with your chosen strategy.

Note that on the protection setting there is a maximum amount that can be placed in vault the rest are moved to treasury.

What is the Cash Buffer and Monthly Burn

The cash buffer is subtracted from your total cash, determining how much is available to invest. This reserved amount ensures that some cash is always on hand, providing a cushion without needing to dip into longer-term investments.The monthly burn impacts how quickly your invested balance decreases over time.

Each month, a portion of the burn is deducted from your investments, simulating ongoing expenses. This reduction affects the projected returns and liquidity ratings by showing how much cash would remain invested over a 12-month period. Both values ensure that the widget’s calculations are grounded in real, sustainable cash flow management.

What does Current Liquidity (days) mean?

In the widget, current liquidity refers to how quickly your cash is accessible without significant penalties or delays. It’s measured in days, indicating the time it would take to free up funds for immediate needs. Setting this value (in days) helps the calculator assess your portfolio’s flexibility.

Higher liquidity ratings mean faster access to cash, which is ideal if you anticipate needing funds on short notice.

Lower liquidity could indicate investments tied up for longer, potentially yielding higher returns but reducing immediate accessibility. This balance ensures your strategy aligns with your need for available cash.

How are the ratings calculated?

The Round star ratings in the widget are calculated based on predefined bands for Yield, Liquidity, and Protection. Here’s how each works:

‍Yield Rating:
The widget maps the expected interest rate from investments to specific ranges relative to the current BOE rate. For example, a lower rate (under 2%) results in a low rating of 1 star , while a high rate (above 4.5%) earns the highest rating of 5 star . This shows how much return you might expect on your invested funds based on historical performance but is not a guarantee of future performance.

‍Liquidity Rating:
Liquidity is rated according to how quickly funds can be accessed. Immediate liquidity (1-2 days) receives the highest rating of 5 stars, while longer lock-up periods (e.g., over 14 days) receive lower ratings. This indicates the ease of accessing funds if needed.

‍Protection Rating:
The Protection Rating reflects how well your funds are safeguarded by spreading them across multiple accounts, ensuring they’re covered by FSCS (Financial Services Compensation Scheme) protection. The more accounts your cash is allocated to, the higher the protection rating, as it maximises the amount insured under FSCS limits. A higher rating means your funds are better protected from risk by being distributed among secure, covered accounts. This approach provides peace of mind, knowing your cash is investments are more resilient to potential financial disruptions.
